Socks Proxy setup using SSH

To use a remote server as a Socks proxy, do the following:

  • ssh -N -D 8080 user@remote_server (once you execute this, the prompt won't be returned, that's fine)
  • Configure your browser to use a Socks Proxy with the following information:
    IP: localhost
    PORT: 8080
  • To stop the proxy, just stop the ssh session with Ctrl-C.
